The season finale of HBO’s medical drama “The Pitt” has caused a split among viewers, comparing the show’s medical authenticity with many online fans calling the latest score racist.

The show has dealt with controversial issues in previous episodes, but is now facing criticism from viewers on social media who say the show’s focus on reality conflicts with expectations of diversity and inclusion.

At the center of the controversy is Hollywood veteran Noah Wyle, with some viewers calling his character’s focus on patient safety racist and others directing criticism at the actor himself.

The season 2 finale saw months of tension culminate in a conflict between Wyle’s character, Dr. Robby, with his female colleague who revealed that she had been hiding her epilepsy. While Wyle’s character argued that he was not fit to run the high-pressure ER, some critics on social media accused the show of being able to.

“I don’t understand why he is so against disabled people being able to work when they are allowed to do so,” read one post online.

However, some viewers went to X to defend the show, pointing to the high level of emergency medicine. One post with more than 1.2 million views warned of the dangers of holding a doctor while a patient is paralyzed due to intubation.

Another viral post added: “It’s so funny how ‘The Pitt’ fandom is like ‘actually it’s okay for an ER doctor to have an uncontrollable seizure, it’s okay if he’s on someone else’s chest or putting a hole in it, for waking up.’

Criticism of Wyle has grown, in part because he is an executive producer and helps write the show.

Some viewers have blurred the line between Wyle and his character after a recent GQ interview discussing the role.

“I make jokes [on set] this season where I was about to yell at someone and say, ‘Someone bring me another woman to yell at!'” Wyle talked about his character’s uneasy relationship with the female crew.

He explained that his character just pushes his colleagues to be better and that actors come to his place “not to be comfortable, but to work.” The comments left some X users upset.

One user on X wrote, “I think Noah Wyle should give up art and become a manosphere broadcaster,” while another called the comment “abusive, no-holds-barred humor about female editors.”

The backlash also extended to the departure of actress Supriya Ganesh, who played the role of Dr. Mohan. Some fans accused Wyle of writing a woman of color while keeping white male leads, despite the character’s season-long storyline about burnout.

Wyle said the show aims to show the reality of high profits in the medical field.
