Honda is recalling 440K Odyssey minivans over an airbag deployment hazard

Honda is recalling 440,830 Odyssey vans due to airbag malfunction, following reports of multiple injuries, federal regulators announced.

In an April 9 announcement, the automaker warned that a software programming error could cause the side airbags to deploy unexpectedly due to minor road impacts, including “driving over potholes, speed bumps, or road debris.”

“Suddenly deploying air bags can increase the risk of injury,” says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Regulators said the affected vehicles include 2018-2022 models manufactured between Jan. 24, 2017, and June 3, 2022.

The problem was reportedly fixed in the production process after that, removing the subsequent model years from production.

To address the issue, authorized dealers will reprogram or replace the electronic units at no charge to vehicle owners.

As of April 2, Honda has recorded 130 warranty claims and 25 reported injuries related to the issue. No accidents have been reported yet, according to NHTSA.

In a sharp warning, safety regulators also noted that Honda may have known about the mistake before they officially reported it, adding that the delay could raise concerns under federal laws governing the timely disclosure of safety issues.

“The information in your report indicates that Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) may have been aware of this issue for more than five business days before filing a report with NHTSA,” the agency said.

“Please be reminded that under Federal law, this agency must be notified of all security inefficiencies and/or non-compliance decisions within five business days…. Significant civil penalties may be assessed for these violations.”
