Florida leads US states with average tax refund of $4,433, report finds

Americans face a midnight deadline to file their 2025 tax returns, but the expected refunds for most taxpayers are larger on average than last year — and taxpayers in some states are getting it. higher returnsaccording to a new report.
Analysis by Advanced Scores of how refund rates have changed across jurisdictions and income levels found that the average refund for 2026 was $3,571, with 72.9% of taxpayers receiving a refund. That’s more than the record set in 2022 of $3,252, although the share of reimbursement recipients dropped from 77.1% in 2021.
Bigger refunds across the country will follow the enactment of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which extended a number of tax policies that were set to expire and included new policies aimed at providing income tax relief from tips and overtime, Social Security, and other provisions such as the interest deduction on new car loans, made in the US.
While those policy changes apply to all US taxpayers, state residents are seeing larger refunds than their peers in other parts of the country based on IRS data used to compile the report.

The Advanced Scores analysis found that the country with the highest average return was In Florida for $4,433 after adjusting for inflation. That comes out of more than 11.1 million federal tax credits filed, of which 67.1% returned taxpayer money.
“Although Tax Day is not usually a day of celebration, Americans can be happy knowing that they will likely get a bigger tax refund or owe less than in previous years. I am proud to support the Working Families Tax Package – the largest tax cut in history for working Americans,” Sen. Ashley MoodyR-Fla., told FOX Business.
“On average, Floridians will receive the largest federal tax refund in the country, keeping hard-earned dollars in the pockets of workers, families and businesses,” Moody added.

Texas ranked second with an average refund of $4,344 out of 13.6 percent of returns filed by Lone Star State taxpayers, with 71.3% receiving a refund.
Two states in the Mountain West ranked third and fourth, with Wyoming taxpayers receiving an average refund of $4,282 with 68.8% of the 280,750 filed returns receiving a refund, followed by Nevada’s an average refund of $4,193 and 69.6% of the Silver State’s 1.6 million refunds receiving a refund.
in Louisiana we rounded out the top five with an average refund of $4,117 across nearly two million returns filed for a refund rate of 73%, which Improved Points ranked as the third highest refund rate among the states.
State-level data in the report showed even higher returns in wealthier areas across the country.

Wyoming’s Teton Countywhich is home to the city of Jackson, had the highest average refund in the country at $15,156, of the 15,210 returns filed in the state only 51.9% received a refund.
Pitkin County, Coloradowhere the city of Aspen is located, had an average return of $8,756 based on 10,520 returns filed for a return rate of 52%.
Utah’s Summit Countyincluding Park City, had an average return of $8,481 and 55.8% of the nearly 25,000 returns filed received a refund.

Collier County, Florida, home to the city of Naples, had an average refund of $7,764 with 56.6% of the 214,600 filers receiving a refund.
