Nearly two-thirds of Americans think President Donald Trump will send the U.S. military to war with Iran, a new national poll says.

And the Reuters/Ipsos poll, conducted Tuesday through Thursday (March 17-19), also shows that the majority of Americans, 55%, say they do not support sending troops as part of the campaign against Iran.

The release of the study comes as the US and Israeli invasion of Iran nears its third week.

Only 7% of those polled said they would support a major strike by US ground forces, while 34% said they would back a limited strike by US special forces.

Fourteen percent of the Republicans surveyed said they would support the operation of the ground forces, while 63% said they would cancel the use of special forces in ground action. Twenty-one percent of Republicans gave the thumbs down to sending US ground troops.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, at a Pentagon briefing earlier this month, refused to ban the use of American ground forces.

“If I was, I wouldn’t tell you,” added the president.

A military attack by the US and Israel led to the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other top officials, and the destruction of the country’s military.

But Iran retaliated by attacking Israel and many of its neighbors in that tense situation Middle East.

Iran has also targeted energy centers with missile and drone attacks in several Persian Gulf countries. It also made the Strait of Hormuz almost impassable to commercial ships, halting nearly 20% of the world’s oil supply, sending fuel prices skyrocketing in the US and around the world.

Most, but not all, national polls conducted since the strikes were launched at the end of February show opposition to the strikes outweighing support, and the Reuters/Ipsos survey is consistent.

According to the survey, which asked 1,545 adults nationwide, 37% of Americans approve of going to war with Iran, while 59% disapprove.

But there is a wide divide, with 77% of Republicans but only 6% of Democrats and 28% of independents supporting the project.
