As the Democratic Congress continues to vote to restore the Department of Homeland Security, the organization is calling the “dangerous misdirection” of sanctuary leaders who say they are “endangering American lives” by releasing illegal rapists, murderers and gang members.
A DHS spokesman criticized Democratic governors Gavin Newsom of California and JB Pritzker of Illinois, both rumored 2028 Democratic presidential nominees, and Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey.
“Governor Newsom and his fellow sanctuary politicians — including Pritzker and Healey — are letting murderers, child abusers and drug traffickers into our country and putting American lives at risk,” a Fox News Digital spokesperson said.
The spokesperson cited statistics showing that seven of the 10 safest cities in the US cooperate with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. They issued a personal appeal to Democratic governors, saying, “If we work together, we can make America safe again.”

“Criminal aliens must not be released from jail and back onto our streets to terrorize innocent Americans,” the speaker continued, adding that the organization “calls on politicians to stop this dangerous crackdown and commit to honoring ICE detainees.”
Most of the 10 safest cities on the US News & World Report list are located in states or territories that have laws that direct municipal authorities to cooperate or coordinate directly with federal immigration enforcement. That cooperation often occurs through 287(g) agreements, which allow local law enforcement agencies to work directly with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The cities also share other characteristics, such as average incomes and a lack of mixed-use or short-term rental housing, underscoring the ongoing debate over whether immigration enforcement cooperation plays an important role in public safety.
According to DHS, more than 33,000 illegal aliens who are criminals are incarcerated in California.
The spokesman cited several illegal immigrants with criminal records arrested by ICE last year who were released to California despite ICE detainers, including child abusers and gang members.
One of these people, Hector Grijalba-Sernas, from Mexico, was once arrested for lewd acts with a child under the age of 14. DHS said despite ICE filing a detainer against Grijalba-Sernas, he was released last year. He is currently in federal custody.
Another, Xujin An, from China, who was arrested for sexual assault and battery in Westminster, California, was arrested by ICE after his detainee was defamed, according to DHS. He is currently in ICE custody pending trial.

A third, Angel Navarro Camarillo, who DHS said is a member of the La Familia gang, was arrested by ICE following an arrest by local authorities for sex offenses. Similarly, the inmate against Navarro Camarillo was not honored, according to DHS. You have been removed from the United States.
Carmelo Corado Hurtado, from Guatemala, was arrested by ICE following a pending arrest warrant and conviction for murder, drunken driving and robbery. ICE removed Corado Hurtado from the US last year.
In Illinois, DHS said ICE arrested illegal immigrant Jose Manuel Fuentes-Vargas, of Mexico, after the inmate was held in contempt and following his conviction for sexually abusing a victim under 13 years old. Fuentes-Vargas is currently in ICE custody.
Another, Leonardo Ignot-Osto, a Mexican national who entered the US illegally at least four times and was convicted of kidnapping a child victim under the age of 17, was arrested by ICE last year after his prisoner was defamed. He was deported from the US
A third, Jaime Mandujano-Nunez, from Mexico, was arrested by ICE late last year after he was released by authorities on an unspecified date following his conviction for child sexual abuse. He was also deported from the US

According to DHS, Medina-Medina, 25, entered the US during the Biden administration and was arrested for shoplifting in Chicago, marking the crime scene before the alleged murder.
On Sunday, the Chicago Police Department formally charged Medina-Medina with the murder of Gorman. In a statement, the Ministry said that Medina-Medina is currently facing six charges, including murder.
A spokesperson for Pritzker’s office told Fox News Digital, “Our thoughts are with the family, friends and Loyola University community grieving the senseless killing of Sheridan Gorman.”
A spokesman for Pritzker said “violent crime has no place on our streets, and we expect the perpetrator to be held fully accountable to the law.”
They added that the Trump administration “needs to stop politicizing terrible tragedies and instead focus on real solutions, like restoring federal funds to prevent violence that support our public safety efforts.”
Fox News Digital also reached out to the offices of Newsom and Healey.
