AI Course Mistakes: What Older AI Students Really Want to Know

Lessons from a Year of Teaching an AI Course

I spent the last year teaching AI to people who never asked to learn it. Not engineers. Not data scientists. Common adults in their 50s, 60s, and 70s keep hearing about ChatGPT and want to know what the fuss is about. We built an AI education platform to answer that question, and along the way, we learned something that changed the way we design everything: what beginners want to know is not the same as what most courses teach.

Questions Nobody Expects

We’ve collected the most common questions from our first 500 readers. The top five were:

  1. Is it safe to use?
  2. Can it see my personal information?
  3. Is it free?
  4. What would I actually use it for?
  5. Am I going to break something?

Note what is missing. No one asked about rapid engineering. No one wanted to understand the Major Language Models. No one cared about the difference between GPT-4 and Claude. They wanted validation first, practical use cases second, and technical details in a distant third.

Most AI courses lead with technical details.

Why “Starting with the Basics” Fails

The general approach to AI education follows a common pattern: explain AI, explain Machine Learning, introduce neural networks, and then move on to applications. It shows how computer science departments have taught for decades.

For a retired teacher who wants to know if ChatGPT can help him write a speech for his friend’s 70th birthday, this approach is like explaining combustion engines before letting someone drive a car. The “fundamentals” that studies think are fundamentals do not exist at all. They are basic concepts from the field of technology. That is something completely different.

The real basics of a non-professional adult are:

  • Where do I go to use this? (Website. You don’t enter anything.)
  • Do I need to pay? (No. The free versions are good for starters.)
  • What am I writing? (Anything you can say to a helpful person.)
  • Will you remember what I told you? (Not between conversations, usually.)

These four answers take about two minutes. After that, you can give someone a laptop, and they’ll get something else to do. But most courses won’t get to this point until the third module.

What Completion Rates Really Tell Us

We track completion rates across our 10-module course. The pattern is consistent: modules that open with a practical task (“Try asking ChatGPT to write a thank you note”) have 85–90% completion. Modules that open with a description (“In this section, we’ll look at how AI generates text”) drop to around 60%.

The same students. Same platform. Same week. The only difference is that we asked them to do something or understand something first.

This is not a criticism of the theory. Understanding how AI works is important, especially when it comes to security and privacy. But sequence is more important than content. Act first, understand later. That’s how most adults learn new technology anyway. You didn’t read the iPhone manual before making your first call.

The Privacy Question Is The Real Gatekeeper

All the AI ​​studies I’ve reviewed treat privacy as a footnote. The section is near the end, after the fun use cases. Usually, the “Be careful what you share” section and move on. For students, privacy is not a footnote. It’s a big event. Over 40% of our new users cite privacy concerns as the reason they haven’t tried AI yet. Not for lack of interest. Not a lack of access. Fear.

When we moved our privacy and security module from 8th place to 2nd place, overall course completion jumped 23%. People weren’t leaving because the content was difficult. They were leaving because they didn’t trust the tool they were being asked to use.

Fix the fear first. Everything else becomes easy.

Designing for the Real Student

After a year of iteration, here’s what works for older AI students who don’t come from a technical background:

  • Lead with action, not theory. The first thing a student should do in any AI course is write something in ChatGPT and get feedback. Not reading about it. Don’t watch the video about it. Do it. That one “oh, that’s what you do” moment is worth more than any explanation.
  • Answer the safety question early and honestly. You can rotate it. Don’t bury. Show them exactly what data is shared, what is not, and how to use the tool without revealing anything personal. Be specific. “Don’t type your bank details” is more useful than “watch your digital footprint.”
  • Use their vocabulary, not yours. If your course material includes the word “parameters,” you’ve already lost a chunk of your audience. This is not putting things down. It’s about meeting people where they are. The “customizable settings” work well and don’t make anyone feel stupid.
  • Give them a reason that is important to them. “AI can increase productivity by 40%” means nothing to a retired person. “You can ask it to explain the doctor’s side effects in plain English” says it all. Know your audience. Choose examples from their world, not yours.
  • Build confidence with small wins. Our most effective module asks students to use ChatGPT for three things in one week: plan a meal, write a short email, and find something they’ve always wanted to know about. At the end of the week, they don’t start anymore. They are users.

The opportunity for many designers of AI courses is not available

There are approximately 20 million adults over the age of 55 in the UK alone. Most of them have smartphones, home broadband, and an active curiosity about AI. They read about it in the newspapers. They heard about the grandchildren. They want to understand you.

The market for accessible, non-technical AI education is huge, and the eLearning industry has been almost completely ignored. The courses available are designed for professionals, career changers, and students. A rapidly growing demographic of new Internet users is being turned away from YouTube videos and newspaper columns.

That’s the gap. And it won’t stay open forever.

What I Would Ask Every Course Designer To Think About

Before you publish your next AI tutorial, try this: give it to someone over the age of 55 who has never used ChatGPT. Don’t help them. Do not explain anything that is not in the lesson. Just look.

If they are confused in the first five minutes, your lesson has a sequence problem. If they ask “But is it safe?” before you cover it, you are burying the lead. If they close the laptop and say, “I’ll come back to it later,” they probably won’t.

Technology is not a barrier. The doctrine says.
