Parts of Walt Disney World’s Frontierland are closing decades after the new Piston Peak

Fans of Frontierland at Walt Disney World Resort are saying goodbye to their favorite attractions as construction on “Piston Peak National Park” accelerates – it will be replaced by a large Western-themed area.
Construction walls now dominate large sections, the blog “Inside the Magic” reported, especially around Big Al’s and the nearby Westward Ho, where guests are accommodated in a small temporary walkway.
That limited access may end soon. Based on filling permits and Disney’s regular schedule, the rest of the route could close soon, according to the blog.

If access is disabled, several icon elements may disappear from view. Big Al’s — one of the few properties tied to the Magic Kingdom’s early years — is considered a piece of history, says the “Disney Dining” blog.

Some Disney fans are worried that the small back road near the Country Bear Musical Jamboree, a longtime attraction, may be closed as Frontierland shifts to the Piston Peak area, blogs report.
One of the most notable changes has been the loss of the Frontierland boardwalk, which was once a quiet path for tourists amid high crowds, says “Blog Mickey”.

The Frontierland Walt Disney World Railroad station is closed, and the train is operating as a shuttle between Fantasyland and Main Street, USA, “Blog Mickey” reports.
These updates follow major changes that have reshaped Frontierland.
Several amenities — including snack bars and merchandise — are being removed, disappearing from the park as Disney renovates the property, according to multiple reports.

The Big Thunder Mountain Railroad – the famous “wilderness ride” – is still closed for maintenance, although it is expected to return in 2026, blogs say.
Right now, Frontierland feels less like the Wild, Wild West to many and more like a construction site — with walls, detours and switchbacks, blogs report.

Disney’s Piston Peak National Park promises a very different experience, as inspired by the Rocky Mountains and Pixar’s “Cars” franchise, the “Disney Castle Dreaming” blog said.
To create a new ride, Disney seems to be rewriting a large part of its history.

For decades, Frontierland has told “the story of our country’s past,” as Walt Disney used to say. (Joe Burbank/Orlando Sentinel/Tribune News Service)
Frontierland was rooted in America’s past.
Launched by Walt Disney in California in 1955, it was designed as a tribute to the pioneering spirit, with riverboats, wilderness trails and frontier towns. A version of the Magic Kingdom opened in 1971 and expanded that vision into a fully operational Old West.

But some fans are not ready to say goodbye to its elements.
“Piston Peak National Park will be part of the largest expansion in Magic Kingdom history.”
“It’s a shame Magic Kingdom is losing Rivers of America to ‘cars,'” one Reddit user wrote last year after hearing about the changes.
Another agreed, saying, “I don’t think the Magic Kingdom should lose [it] or. Such a beautiful place. Sure, Tom Sawyer can be updated, but save the river.”

Last June, Disney reported, “We are excited to share that Piston Peak National Park will continue the tradition of storytelling that spans Liberty Square and Frontierland from opening day.”
The “Disney Parks” blog also reported, “At the heart of all these stories are heroic characters whose self-belief helped pave the way to their dreams. To continue this journey through great American storytelling, Piston Peak National Park will be part of the biggest expansion in the history of the Magic Kingdom.”
