The DIGNIDAD Act of Rep. Maria Salazar is an amnesty in disguise, argues op-ed

Lawyer Maria Salazar keeps insisting that her DIGNIDAD Law is not an amnesty; that it simply gives “prestige” to long-term illegal immigrants who use the new laws he wrote. Mierda. His bill is a backdoor to citizenship for millions of people who broke our laws to get here. Congress should kill it completely, and every Republican sponsor should withdraw their name and apologize to their allies.

To show how ridiculous his credit is, let’s apply it to “The Father of Maryland,” Kilmar Abrego Garcia. He is an illegal immigrant from El Salvador who arrived here in 2011 at the age of 16. Law enforcement tied him to MS-13. His wife accused him of beating her. He was caught on police camera transporting some illegal items from Texas to Maryland. However under Salazar’s bill, he checks all the boxes for a “Dreamer” song that leads to a green card and then citizenship. A future Democratic administration could simply process the paperwork.

The bill considers him eligible for citizenship because he entered as a minor 15 years ago. Don’t worry that you left and were removed—you get an exception to the continuous presence requirement. You’d think his ties to MS-13 would rule him out, and the bill says gang members are banned if they “voluntarily engage in crimes committed by a street gang.” But turn the page and Salazar’s bill quietly rules the law: federal authorities would be expressly prohibited from using federal or state gang databases to prove that anyone is a gang member. Not allegations from FBI gang files. It does not mention gang records. Nothing. Obviously they would need a full criminal conviction for gang activity—which would disqualify a person on ordinary criminal grounds. The kind of coverage that makes you wonder if Maria Salazar thinks we’re all stupid.

Domestic violence? The bill does not count mere allegations or police reports. It requires a conviction, which in the case of Abrego Garcia is absent. And even then, Abrego Garcia could claim to be a victim of domestic violence, sexual abuse, or human trafficking and be released. Human trafficking? The Secretary of Homeland Security may choose to waive that disqualification for “purposes of relief, family unity, or because the waiver is in the public interest.” That’s a hole the size of the van Abrego Garcia uses to transport migrants.

All he’ll need to do is enroll in an “educational program” that helps him get a GED or technical certificate. After meeting the work or education requirement for a few years, he would be eligible for legal permanent residency. From there, it’s smooth sailing to citizenship. Tell me again how this is not amnesty.

And the case of Abrego Garcia is just one example of how bad this practice can be; it gets even worse when you consider the scale. Salazar’s DIGNITY program will offer deferred action and work permits to millions who have come here since late 2020, complete with a path to renewable “Dignity Status.”

This is exactly the opposite of what voters wanted in 2024. The American people elected a Republican Congress and a president who promised mass deportations. Instead, some Republicans are following a Florida Congresswoman’s bill that would allow MS-13 wife beaters to stay and eventually vote. Sponsors, especially those in safe red states who should know better, need to own this. Withdraw your support. Kill the debt. Don’t let it get to the ground.

Law is not optional. We already have a formal immigration system. People wait years, pay thousands, and follow the rules. Giving the same benefits to people who cross the line, join gangs, beat their spouses, or traffic others is a middle finger to all law-abiding Americans and all legal immigrants who have done it right.

There is no fixing this bill. It needs to die. All Republican donors should publicly withdraw their support today. If they don’t agree, first-time voters must vote for them in 2026. The American people did not send them to Washington to vote for amnesty. They should remember that.
