Your Academic Results May Look Good, But Do They Matter?

Learning programs that show 90% completion and 95% satisfaction may make you proud, but they don’t indicate whether your learning strategy is for making money or spending money. More often than not, it’s the latter.

Without a clear link between training and operational performance, such as efficiency, error reduction, or process acceptance, learning remains a cost rather than an investment.

Completion rates and happy sheets don’t tell you whether employees can apply new skills on the job, or whether your training investment is delivering real business value. They just tell you that people showed up and appreciated it.

  • No measurable business objective was defined.
  • The sales manager requested a product knowledge study, but not the performance result.
  • There are no agreed upon metrics beyond completion and satisfaction.
  • IL&D did not have access to operational performance data.
  • After the students had completed the course, no one checked whether the new methods were used in the workplace.

After seeing the common pitfalls, let’s examine how the same situation can happen if the right framework is used from the beginning.

Now, let’s say the team used a different approach to this training program. The operations manager requested the training, and leadership approved it. This lesson was taken out for development, but when my fellow trainee started planning, they stopped short.

“How do you know this is the training your team needs?” ask them, challenge ideas and ensure that lessons will drive real business impact.
