Ted Danson admits he’s not always the nice guy he portrays himself to be.
In a recent episode of his podcast, “When Everyone Knows Your Name,” the 78-year-old actor admitted to his guest, actor Don Cheadle, that he’s “a dick.”
“What I’m going for is a nice guy. What I’m going for is looking for care and love and kindness and all those things. It’s true,” he said. “But I’m a d–k. I can be an a–hole, but I found that out later in life because I was trained to be very sensitive.”
Having always thought of himself as a nice guy, Danson was surprised when his wife of more than 30 years, actress Mary Steenburgen, challenged that image of him.

“He said, ‘You’re as mean as a dog that lives in the yard,’ and it was the first time I’d heard that word and I thought it was such a stupid thing to say about me,” he said. “Fortunately I’ve grown and developed in my relationship with Mary to realize, ‘Oh yeah, I’ve got that,’ which is good to know that both of you.”
The actor rose to fame when he landed the role of Sam Malone on the hit sitcom, “Cheers,” which earned him two Emmy Awards and multiple Golden Globe Awards.
After running on the show, Danson starred in several successful films, later introducing himself to young audiences in “The Good Place,” where he played a demon who developed a conscience and changed for good. He currently stars as a spy in the Netflix series, “The Man Inside.”
Steenburgen joined the second season of the Netflix show as the love interest of Danson’s character. Steenburgen told People in November 2025 that when he found out he had found the place, “there was a lot of crying and jumping … because we were so excited to work together.”

“We’re both actors,” Danson told the outlet. “We were trained in the same way. We had really good things to work on. We woke up every morning giggling about what we were going to do.”
The couple met in 1993 while on the set of the movie “Pontiac Moon” and quickly became one of the most popular couples in Hollywood. They went on to get married in October 1995 in a ceremony held on Martha’s Vineyard.
Speaking about their relationship to People in February 2021, Danson explained that she knew she had to ask him out because she “didn’t think he wasn’t with her all the time.”

“Not to sound cheesy, but I’m going to sign up for 100 years of life,” Steenburgen told the outlet. “You can make me a better person. You’re a really nice person. A great soul. I love the way she sees the world and how she cares about people, and she’s so funny, which is so beautiful, so sexy to me and she smells so good.”
