The US is pushing for a UN resolution to respond to Iran in the Strait of Hormuz

Waltz says Trump has robbed Iran of ‘advantage’ by blocking the Strait of Hormuz
The US Ambassador to the UN, Mike Waltz, explains the US strategy regarding Iran, asserting that President Donald Trump has removed Iran’s economic power by using the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Waltz insists that Iran must stop supporting terrorism and abandon its nuclear ambitions to normalize the situation. He notes the strong US military presence, forcing Iran to participate in direct peace talks.

The United States is pushing forward with a new United Nations Security Council resolution targeting Iran’s actions in the Strait of Hormuz as the administration seeks to strengthen its ongoing maritime operations with international support.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz said on Monday that the effort was aimed at holding Iran accountable for international mines, threatening shipping around the world and trying to disrupt one of the world’s most important trade routes.
“The president and Secretary Rubio ordered us to come to the Security Council in full cooperation and make a decision with Bahrain and the GCC countries,” said Waltz in a press conference. “We’re working on a similar effort at the Security Council that’s separate and distinct from Project Freedom, but obviously related.”
“This decision will involve holding Iran accountable for its flagrant violations of international law,” he added, including requiring Tehran to stop laying sea mines, disclose its locations and work with the United Nations to establish humanitarian channels used by dozens of UN agencies to deliver aid around the world.

The official push comes as the U.S. military moved Monday to ensure the deployment of ships to the crisis under President Donald Trump’s Project Freedom. The US Central Command has confirmed that the American military has sunk six small Iranian boats that threaten ships, underscoring the weakness of the cease-fire and the continuing dangers of the flow of energy around the world.
Waltz made the effort as part of a broader plan to set a global example.
“We cannot set the standard that if two countries have a conflict … you can start a joint sanction in the global economy,” he said.
When asked by Fox News Digital about the broader implications of Iran’s actions, Waltz said the US is working to ensure international waterways cannot be armed.

“You can’t just casually throw sea mines into the sea to sow doubt and fear in the maritime world,” he said. “And you can’t see it as a source of income … no country has the right to punish the whole world as part of a conflict.”
He also revealed how people are dealing with this problem, noting that thousands of human sailors have been caught up in the growing chaos.
“These are captains, engineers, cooks, deckhands … who did not take part in this conflict. They should not be forced to suffer,” said Waltz, adding that the administration emphasized the humanitarian aspect of ensuring safe passage and delivery of aid.
Fox News Digital also asked if the US and its allies should look beyond protecting the strait and consider long-term structural solutions to bypass it altogether.
“I know that our Gulf partners and allies are thinking about that,” Waltz said, referring to existing infrastructure such as Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline and export routes in the Gulf of Oman.
“I know they are looking for other ways to separate their ways and separate their economy,” he added.

While the US military effort is focused on immediate stabilization, including targeting ships and preventing Iranian aggression, Waltz emphasized that the UN resolution is aimed at addressing the wider international consequences and preventing similar problems in the future.
Despite the pressure, questions remain about whether Russia and China will support the move after a previous attempt in April failed.
Waltz said the current proposal is narrow and focused on clear violations of international law, which he says should make opposition less likely.
