Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has been released from the ICU but will continue to spend time in the hospital before being released, according to a spokesman for the former politician.

“The mayor and his family appreciate the outpouring of love and prayers,” said Ted Goodman, a political strategist who hosted the live show with Giuliani, in a statement posted on social media Wednesday.

“Mayor Giuliani—the man who brought down the Mafia, saved New York City, and ran to the towers on September 11—is the fighter he always was, and he’s winning this battle,” he continued.

Goodman added that “the power of prayer works” and the former mayor “feels it,” encouraging people to keep coming.

Giuliani, 81, was hospitalized in critical but stable condition on Sunday due to severe breathing problems.

On Monday, Giuliani’s doctor, Maria Ryan, told Fox News reporter Danamarie McNicholl that he became ill after returning from a trip to Paris, and his breathing became so difficult that he needed to be hospitalized and put on a ventilator.

Ryan said his condition became critical, prompting a priest to be called to his bedside to perform last rites.

But by Tuesday, his condition had improved enough for doctors to take him off the ventilator. He is breathing independently and is able to speak.

Ryan said he expects Giuliani to make a full recovery.

“He’s a hero – the way he was yesterday in such a critical situation, a priest came and anointed him,” Ryan said. “And all the prayers from the surrounding areas – it’s like a miracle. This boy has 9 health, today he is doing much better.”

Giuliani has faced many health challenges in recent years but has remained active in public life.

Earlier this week, Goodman noted Giuliani’s medical history following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, when he was exposed to debris while responding to Ground Zerolater leading to a diagnosis of obstructive airways disease.

He was also seriously injured in a car accident in New Hampshire in August of last year, which left him with a broken collarbone, multiple bruises and other injuries.

President Donald Trump said after learning of Giuliani’s hospitalization Sunday that he was the “Best Mayor” in New York City history.

“Our wonderful Rudy Giuliani, a True Hero, and the Best Mayor in the History of New York City, BY FAR, is hospitalized, and in critical condition,” Trump said, in part.
