Why the Excitement Around AI Learning Is Worth It
Everyone is rushing to “empower AI.” But in the race to go fast, are we helping people learn, or are we just helping them feel like they have? Five years ago, if someone had asked me to explain Machine Learning, I would have confidently opened three browser tabs, read them quickly, and silently hoped that no one asked a follow-up question. Today, I can not only understand the basics but also engage myself in real conversations about embedding AI in the learning experience. Except for the automatic “personalization engine” every five minutes. That change is important to me. There is a lot. AI has made complex ideas more accessible, more democratic, and less intimidating for people in all roles: L&D professionals, influencers, business leaders. And I love that. But despite that happiness, I have been noticing something else. Haste. And not always considerate.
The AI Learning Gold Rush Is Real—And Fast
McKinsey & Company reports that AI adoption has more than doubled in recent years. LinkedIn’s Workplace Learning Report highlights AI learning as one of the most in-demand skill areas globally. And you can hear it from the floor: each learning deck has an “AI-enabled” slide, all tools appear “AI-enabled,” and the entire team is motivated to “learn AI, fast.” It’s exciting. It is necessary. There is chaos again.
If “Learning AI” Becomes a Checkbox
Here is what I want us to pause for a moment. Don’t stop, just pause. Because somewhere in the argument of “getting everyone to use AI,” learning runs the risk of becoming a one-hour webinar that everyone attends but few do, a demo of a tool dressed up as skill-building, or a shiny feature added without real use. I’ve seen this pattern before, just in different words. The intention is right. The execution is quick. And when that happens, we don’t really build strength. We build familiarity and a sense of learning. Familiarity is not the same as skill. And exposure is not the same as application.
What actually helped me was learning AI
What worked for me was not the speed. It was the context. Understanding where AI fits into my work. Testing in small, low-pressure ways. Seeing real examples instead of abstract frameworks. No one gave me “the perfect AI learning curve” and expected me to follow it sequentially. It was messy, repetitive, and honestly, very effective at it. That’s why I worry when learning is designed the other way around: tool first, context later.
Essential Differences in Practice
The World Economic Forum puts it well: the real challenge isn’t introducing AI concepts at scale, it’s redesigning humans in a meaningful way at scale. This word, logically, is very suggestive. Awareness is not power. Exposure is not an application. Access is not discovery. This is not just a semantic difference. It’s a gap between the group that says “let’s train AI” and the group that has changed the way they work.
So What Should We Do Instead?
Not to slow down. Not to run away from AI. Definitely not. But maybe we answered the question we started with. Start with problems, not tools. Before introducing any AI capability, ask: what are we actually trying to solve? The tool is the answer, not the starting point. Design compatibility. A customer support executive and a learning designer don’t need the same AI training. One size rarely fits everyone. Keep it human. Ironically, the more the learning experience feels human, the more likely AI adoption will stick. People don’t change the way they work because of a compelling demo. They changed because it made sense to them. And finally, open the space to explore. Learning AI doesn’t have to feel like passing an exam. It should feel like trying something, failing a little, and trying again, with enough psychological safety to do so.
Where I Arrived
I’m still learning a lot about pro-AI. If anything, than ever before. Because I’ve seen what happens when it’s done right, when someone goes from “I think Machine Learning is … something with data?” “Here’s how we can use this in our curriculum.” Not completely. But honestly. And that’s the point. We don’t need everyone to become an AI expert overnight. We just need them to be thoughtful, confident users of it.
AI learning the gold rush is not a bad thing. It means people care. It means we are moving forward. But if we are not careful, we can end up with too much work and not enough real skill. So maybe the question isn’t “How fast can we scale AI learning?” It’s “How well are we helping people use it?”
