Kentucky basketball fans are melting down after losing top recruit to Kansas

Things aren’t going too well for the Kentucky Wildcats basketball program these days.

I don’t want you to feel bad about them or anything. This is Kentucky we’re talking about, after all, but compared to the success they’ve experienced in the past, it’s safe to say that the current regime in Lexington falls short of the Big Blue Nation’s expectations.

Most programs would be very happy with 22 wins and being the second worst part away from the Sweet 16, but most programs are not the Kentucky Wildcats.

Fans had reason to be optimistic, however, as the nation’s top coach, Tyran Stokes, was set to announce where he would play basketball for the next semester and a half before making the inevitable jump to the NBA on Tuesday, and Wildcats fans were sure to secure his services.

It’s hard to blame them, as the coaches kept him on campus and were even willing to add his high school assistant coach, former NBA guard Jamal Crawford, to the Kentucky staff.

It seemed like the planets aligned for Big Blue Nation to finally get some good news, and the mood on social media was very optimistic.

And the winner…

“Hey, we’re breastfeeding again!”

The hits kept coming for the Wildcats, and this was a player they couldn’t afford to lose after saying goodbye to key contributors like Mouhamed Dioubate and Denzel Aberdeen through the transfer portal.

Naturally, the Kentucky fans who flooded social media Wednesday afternoon in anticipation of the news weren’t too happy when they learned that Stokes was headed to Lawrence in the fall.

“Trash.” “The circus.” “The clown show.”

I know it might seem a little extreme to take this bend out of one recruit, but this is the best player in high school right now. A potential game changer next season.

Plus, it’s indicative of a bigger problem in Lexington right now.

Mark Pope and his staff have no one to look to right now, and they’re already hemorrhaging talent this offseason, and it could be the final proof that Pope is in over his head.

It’s easy to point and laugh at BBN (Lord knows I have one); however, I don’t think that’s right here.

Kentucky fans have crazy high standards for their coach, but those standards aren’t realistic.

They expect goodness because they’ve seen it before, and I can’t knock them for wanting the same from the Pope.

If this was an isolated incident, I could understand the frustration with these fans, but this seems to be a sign of a bigger problem.

Pope might want to start looking for a good dealer in the Lexington area, because unless he turns this thing around, he won’t last long in this job.
