Tesla is recalling Cybertrucks over tire collision risk

Tesla is recalling Cybertrucks over concerns that their wheel hubs could separate, potentially causing the tires to fall off, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

According to the report, the recall affects Cybertrucks with 18-inch alloy wheels sold between 2024 and 2026. Only 173 cars were recalled.

The problem stems from the brake rotors, with the report saying that extreme road conditions can “squeeze” the stud holes in the wheel rotor, creating cracks. If the crack continues and gets worse, it may cause the tire to come off completely.

Tesla said the issue goes back to pre-production testing in 2025, which indicated that the geometry of the wheel hub and bearing could contribute to the rotor cracking. Although early testing found no loss of function or motor control, engineers determined that continued use under stress could lead to separation of the wheel hub and hub.

The company said the planned durability improvement on the brake rotors was not included when production began on August 28, 2025, due to a change management error.

Tesla later pointed to one real-world case in October 2025 where a customer reported brake vibrations, and broken brake rotors during a service check. The rotors have been replaced, and the company said there have been no crashes, injuries or deaths related to the issue.

The report warns that early signs the car may be affected include vibrations or unusual noises from the wheels while driving.

As of April 14, Tesla identified three warranty claims that may be related to the condition and said it has initiated the recall out of an abundance of caution.

The recall comes days after Tesla announced a separate recall of more than 218,000 vehicles for a rearview camera issue that could delay the display of the image and increase the risk of a crash, according to NHTSA.
